When it comes to guiding, my philosophy is to get the mount guiding on its own well enough so that PHD2 has very little to do. The important things to focus on for your mount are that it is well balanced (maybe a little easy heavy if your mount requires it). Next, you need to have very good polar alignment - the PoleMaster is the best tool I've seen yet to solve this problem. Another important factor is to make sure your autoguide camera is in focus and following a start in the full-width-half-maximum (FWHM) range between 2 and 4.
